Pronouns

Definition - As the name suggests, pronouns replace or stand for a noun and generally they take the place of a noun already mentioned in the speech or text. They are used to avoid repeating a noun when it is clear to who or what we are referring.

Types - There are many kinds of pronouns. The following is a short list of the most common types.

Personal pronouns represent people or things:
             • ich [I], Sie [you], dich [you], sie [she or it], ihm [to him or to it], ...

Interrogative pronouns are used in questions:
             • was? [what?], wer? [who?], welcher? [which? or what?], ...

Demonstrative pronouns refer to location:
             • dieser [this], jene [that], ...

Note: demonstratives can be either adjectives or pronouns depending on the presence or absence of nouns.
