Schaum's Outline of German Grammar
LearnPlus Rating

The Schaum's Outline series is quite popular, especially with students. This Grammar is ideal for school test preparation, but will equally serve those who are taking a self-study course. The book covers all the main aspects of German grammar from articles and nouns to verbs and word order. It will be a good companion to beginners as well as intermediate learners, while advanced students can use the text for review.
Each chapter introduces the various rules with explanations and examples and then offers several exercises so you can practice. The answers are provided at the back of the book. Note that while all examples are translated into English, the exercises are not. Some sentences may therefore prove difficult to understand if you are a beginner. Other helpful sections are a guide to pronunciation at the beginning and verb charts at the end.

Suitable for advanced students Die Grammatik LearnPlus Rating

Duden is the most respected publisher of works relating to the German language and many German teachers use this particular book as their personal grammar. This book is written in accessible language, but in German only. Consequently, you will make the most of it only if you are at an advanced level or feel very confident of your grasp of the language. If that is the case, you can use the best grammatical resource available!
This is the essential reference for all your questions about grammar, especially those elusive points that other texts do not cover or do not explain thoroughly. Die Grammatik is based on spoken as well as written contemporary Hochsprache (standard German) and includes the language variations of the different German-speaking countries. The two main chapters are 'Das Wort' (word) and 'Der Satz' (sentence) with numerous sections about the sound, spelling, classes of German words, etc. At the back, you will also find a useful glossary of grammatical terms.

There is an initial short guide to pronunciation and grammatical notes about all the various verb forms. Here you will also find the explanation of rules that are typical of the German grammar, e.g. the distinction between 'weak' and 'strong' verbs.
At the back of the book, there are additional useful sections: many verb drills (with answers); idiomatic expressions and proverbs; information about word order; weather-related and other impersonal verbs; and notes about how to handle the many German verbs that have a prefix.
